One of our weirdest inventions, a speed boat tour to distant Susac island where the only inhabitants are the lighthouse keepers and our shepherd host with his family. Susac is known as a dry island, rain here is extremely rare so vegetation and wildlife are fascinating. You will feel as like you’ve been thrown into an ancient botanical garden, don’t be surprised by a hawk’s scream as it plunges down from the skies. Approaching it from the sea you will get the feeling that you are heading for 2 islands as the middle part is lower than it´s northern and southern peaks, especially in the summer mist. On the southern rock above a steep cliff on a 100 meter high cliff we find operational stone lighthouse built in year 1878., a safety light for seamen. The island has been visited and inhabited since the stone age and while strolling around it’s sometimes possible to find some ancient artifacts. The island has never had a fire on, a usual burden for all the other islands, and for that we have to thank the strong winds as well as sheep and goats that freely feast everywhere on Susac. Sheep are the reason for our visit as our shephed host will prepare a fresh whole young lamb on the spit. We believe this to be an unprecedented gourmet experience as these animals are fed with a great variety of salty rare or endemic plants. If you are looking for a wildlife gourmet experience this as genuine as it gets.
